Who Are The Self-Proclaimed Rockstars?
The Self-Proclaimed Rockstars consider themselves to be the luckiest band on earth. They aren’t the type of people that usually get to play rock and roll, yet they do. They’re not the type of band that’s supposed to be succeeding in Boston, yet they are. They’re supposed to be domesticated suburbanites. They’re not supposed to be rockstars….and they’re not. They’re Self-Proclaimed Rockstars.
Founding members Johnny Malone and Mick Greenwood started the band with a smirk and shrug, stating simply - “let’s see how far we can take this”. They cut their teeth in seedy dives with tough crowds outside the city of Boston. There was only one way to keep the peace in these crowds…and that was to make people dance. They found quickly that simply playing someone’s favorite song for them won’t make them dance…you gotta ENTERTAIN them. Keeping these crowds entertained meant learning to roll with the punches on stage and not lose control of the crowd. Tech failures? Rowdy crowds? Fist fights? Bad sound? Who cares?!
In this environment, SPR learned to pair their dancy, sing-along song catalog with a stage show that’s heavy on charisma and crowd interaction. SPR worked their way out of the dives and are currently having the time of their lives. They’ve been able to play at venues they used to dream about like The Middle East, The House of Blues, and The Bitter End in NYC. As huge New England sports fans, they’ve been thrilled to play in front of stadiums to large tailgate crowds at Boston College and New England Patriots’ football games. They even rocked the Bitter End so hard at a recent show, that rock legend John Popper shocked the band by emerging from the crowd to join them on stage!
The band loves what they do — they love the crowds that they entertain, the stages they touch, the songs that they sing and the chords that they play. Motivated by their successes, but always humbled by their roots, the goal of SPR has remained unchanged - to see how far they can take it
